The pace of implementation varies widely throughout EU-27 member nations.

For the most part, the larger markets have legislation in the pipework if not already established.

Sweden has taken the approach of waiting for the GO standard (EN 16325) to be revised; other countries may follow suit.

Where there are empty entries, the issue is still under discussion, or the status is unknown.

2022-11 Status of gGO registries

While some countries have established and operational green gas registries, these do not necessarily constitute a GO registry and more importantly do not necessarily follow a uniform standard; an established GO registry that follows RED II/EECS methodologies will allow for more harmonious cross-border trading.

Germany is perhaps the best example of this - Germany currently produces more biomethane and trades in certificates more than any other country. However, it was only recently they looked at establishing a gas GO system.

While Germany has no existing gGO register, they have one of the largest biomethane certificate registers in the world via dena. 

, with HKNR (eGO authority), nabisy (sustainability register) and Biogasregister Deutschland (dena) to determine how gGOs should be handled. The timeline for an operating registry appears to be 

The French registry is yet to open to third parties and cross-border trading - while GRDF is the current issuing body, this may change in H1 2023. It should also be noted that GRDF is not a recognised issuing body for gGOs for AIB purposes.

The parliament recently passed legislation with a tariff system for biomethane support (which received 

), along with plans for a GO register to be administered by the GSE who are already involved on the eGO side.

Enegas GTS was announced as the issuing body by the AIB in October, and earlier this year passed legislation to support biomethane production. The procedures for the set-up of a gGO registry, to be spearheaded by Enegas GTS, were 

The biogas organisation in Romania (ARBIO) had been working with the REGATRACE project to establish a legal framework, and eventually set up an operating register, but has run into numerous setbacks. The Polish biomethane scene has also observed similar difficulties. It should also be noted that neither of these member states is operating an AIB register for eGOs.

While Vertogas is the authorised body in the Netherlands, they are yet to be recognised by the AIB as such - considering the maturity of the Green Gas Market in the country including legislation and an operating register, this appears to be a mere formality.

Have decided to adopt a "wait and see" approach regarding the revision of the GO standard (EN 16325), which will dictate the characteristics that should be specified on a GO, amongst other things. Legislation regarding establishing a gGO register has been drafted but will be on hold until then.

The authority for eGOs (MEKH) will likely be responsible for issuances, although Hungary is at a preliminary stage concerning a gGO registry and associated legislation.

Arguably have the most mature gGO registry in Europe, with energinet gGOs also seeing extensive cross-border trade to both Sweden and Germany.
